Electron Microbursts Induced by Nonducted Chorus Waves

چکیده

Microbursts, short-lived but intense electron precipitation observed by low-Earth-orbiting satellites, may contribute significantly to the losses of energetic electrons in outer radiation belt. Their origin is likely due whistler mode chorus waves, as evidenced a strong overlap spatial correlation two. Despite previous efforts on modeling bursty induced most, if not all, rely assumption that waves are ducted along field line with zero wave normal angle. Such ducting limited cases when fine-scale plasma density irregularities present. In contrast, propagate nonducted way plasmas smoothly varying density, allowing normals gradually refract away from magnetic line. this study, interaction and investigated using test particle simulation. Substantial differences transport found between two different scenarios, resultant patterns compared. comparison valuable for interpreting low Earth-orbiting satellite observations flux variation response magnetospheric waves.

Ducted propagation of chorus waves: Cluster observations

Ducted propagation of whistler waves in the terrestrial magnetosphere-ionosphere system was discussed and studied long before the first in-situ spacecraft measurements. While a number of implicit examples of the existence of ducted propagation have been found, direct observation of ducts has been hampered by the low sampling rates of measurements of the plasma density. The present paper is base...

Energization of relativistic electrons in the presence of ULF power and MeV microbursts: Evidence for dual ULF and VLF acceleration

[1] We examine signatures of two types of waves that may be involved in the acceleration of energetic electrons in Earth’s outer radiation belts. We have compiled a database of ULF wave power from SAMNET and IMAGE ground magnetometer stations for 1987– 2001. Long-duration, comprehensive, in situ VLF/ELF chorus wave observations are not available, so we infer chorus wave activity from low-altitu...

electron acceleration by Gravitational Waves

We investigate the non-linear interaction of a strong Gravitational Wave with the plasma during the collapse of a massive magnetized star to form a black hole, or during the merging of neutron star binaries (central engine). We found that under certain conditions this coupling may result in an efficient energy space diffusion of particles. We suggest that the atmosphere created around the centr...

The dual role of ELF/VLF chorus waves in the acceleration and precipitation of radiation belt electrons

This paper provides a brief review of the role that chorus waves play in controlling the dynamics of the Earth’s outer radiation belt. Three major topics are discussed: (i) the morphology, characteristics, and properties of chorus waves themselves, with special emphasis on more recent results, (ii) the role that chorus waves play in the loss of radiation belt particles, showing initial results ...
